Guest E-pistle
The Rev. Canon Timothy Dombek
Canon to the Ordinary

The Rev. Timothy Dombek, Canon to the Ordinary, is the guest writer for the E-pistle this week while Bishop Smith is on his annual Lenten Retreat.

Almost five months have passed since beginning my new ministry on the bishop's staff--what a whirlwind of an introduction to life in the Diocese of Arizona it has been. Since Oct. 1, I have been to many of the "missionary outposts" in the diocese: Flagstaff, Douglas, Tombstone, Lake Havasu City, Nogales, Lakeside, Kingman, Sedona, Benson, St. Paul the Apostle Sudanese Mission, and San Pablo's Latino Mission.

A Final Thought

Fr. Kino

The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith
Bishop of Arizona

Bishop Kirk S. SmithDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

One of the privileges enjoyed by an Episcopal Bishop is the ability to add to the liturgical calendar those local "saints" worthy of veneration by the faithful of the diocese. This is the first step towards eventually having that person's name added to the liturgical calendar of the National Church, printed in the Book of Common Prayer.

In my time as Bishop of Arizona I have been struck by the contribution of two outstanding missionaries: Padre Eusebio Kino (above), the 17th Century Italian Jesuit who explored Arizona and northern Mexico, and The Rev. Endicott Peabody, who founded St. Paul's Church in Tombstone in 1882, the oldest Protestant congregation in the State, before his more than 55 years as Headmaster of Groton School in Massachusetts.

Faithfully,

+Kirk

To the best of my knowledge, every single church, mission, and preaching station within the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona now has a very basic website. Please go to www.azdiocese.org/map/list.html and check your church's website and its posted information and let me know of any changes that need to be made.

If you encounter any communication problems, please report it to me at greta@azdiocese.org.
