Guest E-pistle
The Rev. Canon Timothy Dombek

Canon to the Ordinary

One of the most attractive things I learned about the Diocese of Arizona as I was discerning about and interviewing for this Fresh Start logoposition was how the bishop expected his Canon and program staff to be out in the field on a regular basis, to be in churches and working with congregations. What a commitment from the bishop's office, to be on the ground regularly in missions and parishes across the diocese and not only there during the Episcopal visit for confirmation. I can't recall ever seeing such a commitment as that before, and I wanted to be a part of that kind of ministry to congregations.

Actions speak louder than words

PHOENIX - Lyle Skillen is a firm believer in strength for peace and as a result he's notSudanese girl what you might expect from a self-described conservative. Skillen, who retired from the U.S. Navy after 21 years - 17 of those as a special operations technician supporting the SEALs with training as an emergency medical technician, just returned to Arizona after a second voluntary tour to Darfur doing humanitarian work.

He's also a member of the grassroots campaign, Arizona Department of Peace. Skillen, 49, said George Washington wanted both departments of war and peace, but the war department prevailed. (If you look at the $1 bill it has an eagle clutching 13 arrows symbolizing war and a laurel branch symbolizing peace.)

After retiring from the Navy, Skillen worked as the Charter School Liaison for the Arizona Department of Education. But several things happened that made him rethink what he was doing. One of the things that made an impression on him was meeting some of the Lost Boys of Sudan at St. Stephen's, Phoenix. That put a face to a global issue. "It's much more personal," he said.

To the best of my knowledge, every single church, mission, and preaching station within the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona now has (at least) a very basic website. Please go to www.azdiocese.org/map/list.html and check your church's website and its posted information and let me know of any changes that need to be made.

If you encounter any communication problems, please report it to me at greta@azdiocese.org.

Wizards and Wonders

PRESCOTT - We are only three weeks away from the opening of Summer Camp at Chapel Rock, Prescott. What fun I have had in putting the children's morning program together. This program is taken from a curriculum entitled Wizards and Wonders, A Hero's Journey with Harry Potter written by Trudy Ardizzone and published by Leaders Resources, an Episcopal-based publishing company.

In 2003 when I was serving as Director of Christian Education at Christ Church of the Ascension, Paradise Valley, I offered this program. When all was said and done it was one of the most spiritual Vacation Bible School programs I had ever offered. The children loved it. They walked away with a fuller understanding of who they are and whose they are.
