This fact was again made clear to me a few weeks ago when I had the opportunity to commemorate the contribution of the first Arizona missionary Padre Eusebio Kino. Kino died in 1711 after spending nearly 30 years on horseback baptizing, teaching, and improving the quality of life for Native Americans in Sonora and Southern Arizona. It was fitting that about 100 of us gathered (on the exact date of his death) at Tumacácori, a mission that Kino himself had founded, to celebrate the Eucharist and to add his name to our liturgical calendar. STAR OF SHOW: Theresa Bennett gets her wedding dress closed during the fashion show rehearsal last week in Mesa. Thomas Boggan/Tribune Marital commitment has been hard to find in her family, where three older sisters had children outside of wedlock and divorce was routine for other kin. "Who will care for me? Who will be my family"? These were the poignant words spoken by Gabriel Kuaney a "lost boy" from the Sudan, who spoke at a Millennium Development Goals workshop in December at Trinity Cathedral, Phoenix about his experience of being torn from his family and home by war. In those basic questions, Gabriel summed up the message and the hope for the MDGs. Presiding Bishop Katherine Jefforts Schori has said that the church's larger vision will be framed and shaped in the coming years by a vision of shalom, a Hebrew word for peace, a peace that is embedded in the MDGs - a world where the hungry are fed, the ill are healed, the young educated, women and men treated equally, and where all have access to clean water and adequate sanitation, basic health care, and a promise of development that does not endanger the rest of creation. Please go to www.azdiocese.org/map/list.html and check your church's website and its posted information and let me know of any changes that need to be made.
