The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith
Bishop of Arizona

Bishop Kirk S. SmithThe spring House of Bishops Meeting in Camp Allen has just concluded and I want share my impressions with you before I head back to Phoenix. We have enjoyed six days of fellowship, prayer (we worshipped together three times a day), great preaching, and teaching against the backdrop of springtime in rural Texas. I even managed to join some colleagues for a couple of hours of horseback-riding!

Much of our time together was spent on the hearing of reports and presentations, but the meeting was framed by two very emotional bookends.

It's a girl!
birth announcement
The Rev. Romeo Rabusa (priest in charge of St. Luke's at the Mountain, Phoenix) and his wife Elizabeth Rabusa are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Jéan-Marie Joseph Rabusa on Friday, March 7th, at 7:53 p.m. at Banner Estrella Hospital. While births are always a reason for thanksgiving, Jéan-Marie's birth is even more so since her mother is undergoing treatment for cancer.
Service to commemorate Fr. Kino

The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith
Bishop of Arizona

Bishop Kirk S. SmithDear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

One of the privileges enjoyed by an Episcopal Bishop is the ability to add to the liturgical calendar those local "saints" worthy of veneration by the faithful of the diocese. This is the first step towards eventually having that person's name added to the liturgical calendar of the National Church, printed in the Book of Common Prayer.

Fr. Kino

In my time as Bishop of Arizona I have been struck by the contribution of two outstanding missionaries: Padre Eusebio Kino (above), the 17th Century Italian Jesuit who explored Arizona and northern Mexico, and The Rev. Endicott Peabody, who founded St. Paul's Church in Tombstone in 1882, the oldest Protestant congregation in the State, before his more than 55 years as Headmaster of Groton School in Massachusetts.

Faithfully,

+Kirk

Items for victims of domestic violence

Ken & Mindy Weisser-Lee
Native American Ministry Program Group

The Native American Ministry Program Group has decided to adopt the San Carlos Apache Domestic Violence Program as a part of its ongoing ministry. This program needs items for domestic violence victims and their children. These women often must leave their homes in a hurry and are not able to bring clothing or essential items with them. We are requesting support from the various congregations in the Diocese to make this ministry effective.

There is a great need for many items, but to simplify things, the native Ministries Program Group has decided to concentrate on hygiene kits for the women and diapers for the children. These items are always in high demand, and there is no question that they will be much appreciated.

A Final Thought
There will be no E-pistle on Friday.
To the best of my knowledge, every single church, mission, and preaching station within the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona now has a very basic website. Please go to www.azdiocese.org/map/list.html and check your church's website and its posted information and let me know of any changes that need to be made.

If you encounter any communication problems, please report it to me at greta@azdiocese.org.
