| Our Diocesan E-newsletter | | | | Bishop Smith's weekly column | The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith Bishop of Arizona | The Second Annual Ministry fair has come and gone. With a rush of last minute registrations we had about 260 in attendance, down considerably from last year. As last year, the evaluations were overwhelming favorable. So the staff and I are a bit puzzled as to why the lower numbers. Talking with the attendees, we heard a similar story. "This is hugely helpful for those of us who are lay leaders. It really gives us the tools to do our jobs, but our clergy leaders mostly didn't mention it, or encourage people to attend." Continued at: http://www.azdiocese.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/279 | Calendar

PHOENIX - The Phoenix Art Museum presentation of Illuminated Manuscripts, three exhibitions devoted to religious book arts focusing on handmade Bibles throughout history, is scheduled to conclude Sunday, March 9. Three biblical displays are available: Illuminating the Word: The Saint John's Bible showcasing the monumental manuscript being crafted right now, The Early History of the Bible from the world-class collection of sacred manuscripts at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, and Selections from the James Melikian Collection here in Phoenix. They bring together the old and the new: illustrated hand-written manuscripts produced in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance - from an 8th century Egyptian fragment to a 17th century Torah scroll - and the only handwritten and illuminated Bible commissioned since the advent of the printing press more than 500 years ago, combining a centuries old tradition of craftsmanship with modern imagery and technology.
Phoenix Art Museum Steele Gallery 1625 N. Central Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85004 Wednesday-Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. | Service to commemorate Fr. Kino | The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith Bishop of Arizona Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, One of the privileges enjoyed by an Episcopal Bishop is the ability to add to the liturgical calendar those local "saints" worthy of veneration by the faithful of the diocese. This is the first step towards eventually having that person's name added to the liturgical calendar of the National Church, printed in the Book of Common Prayer. In my time as Bishop of Arizona I have been struck by the contribution of two outstanding missionaries: Padre Eusebio Kino (above), the 17th Century Italian Jesuit who explored Arizona and northern Mexico, and The Rev. Endicott Peabody, who founded St. Paul's Church in Tombstone in 1882, the oldest Protestant congregation in the State, before his more than 55 years as Headmaster of Groton School in Massachusetts. Jeremy M. Warnick St. Mark's, Mesa The theme of the 47th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Arizona was "Into the Regions Beyond." The focus was on the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and The Episcopal Church's call to respond to these eight mission priorities. Woven throughout the Convention was the call to embrace the power of One (www.one.org). In the Exhibit Hall, the Native American Issues Group from St. George's, Holbrook had a display featuring a four-foot tall replica of a drinking well which they offered for raffle as a fundraiser. Tess Cowan, of St. Mark's, Mesa, was working two other booths when she spotted the well. She also discovered that Episcopal Relief and Development has a "Gifts for Life" program which allows folks to buy necessities like safe drinking wells for people in need. In a moment of divine inspiration, Tess realized that she wanted to win the raffle for that well and use it as a means to raise money for the purchase of a real well in a village in need of water. The Native American Ministry Program Group has decided to adopt the San Carlos Apache Domestic Violence Program as a part of its ongoing ministry. This program needs items for domestic violence victims and their children. These women often must leave their homes in a hurry and are not able to bring clothing or essential items with them. We are requesting support from the various congregations in the Diocese to make this ministry effective. There is a great need for many items, but to simplify things, the native Ministries Program Group has decided to concentrate on hygiene kits for the women and diapers for the children. These items are always in high demand, and there is no question that they will be much appreciated. Continued at: http://www.azdiocese.org/dfc/newsdetail_2/278 | Shameless commerce department . . .

| The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith Bishop of Arizona Remember book reports? We had to do them in school, and sometimes hated them, but when we grew up, we came to appreciate book-reviews. Here is one of a new book by Garry Wills, What Jesus Meant. This book has already appeared on the New York Times best-seller list, and is reviewed in that newspaper's book review section by David Gibson. It gives us some food for thought. Faithfully, +Kirk The Rt. Rev. Kirk S. Smith Bishop of Arizona | To the best of my knowledge, every single church, mission, and preaching station within the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona now has a very basic website. Please go to www.azdiocese.org/map/list.html and check your church's website and its posted information and let me know of any changes that need to be made. | | | | | |
